The North Umpqua Foundation Scholarship

Established by Paul and Lory Utz, this scholarship provides financial assistance to outstanding scholars working towards a career goal in fisheries science, aquatic ecology or related fields. Nominees must be enrolled in a full-time program related to their career goal in an undergraduate or graduate program in an accredited university or college. Nominees for scholarship awards must be Oregon residents, US citizens or students with permanent resident status. Preference is given to residents of Douglas County, Oregon.

An annual scholarship announcement will be sent to deans or department chairs of pertinent departments soliciting nominees for a scholarship award. The names of one or more nominees may be submitted to The North Umpqua Foundation for final scholarship consideration by the Scholarship Selection Committee. The Departmental Chair, or delegated Faculty Advisor of the nominee, is requested to send a letter of recommendation along with a brief essay written by the nominee outlining academic and professional long-term goals. The faculty letter of recommendation should address the following areas: a character reference; academic promise as demonstrated by college grade point average and aptitude test scores; academic and extracurricular accomplishments; awareness of the problems in the proposed field of study; research experience; and leadership skills .

The dollar amount of an annual scholarship award ranges from $1,000 for an undergraduate student to $3,000 for a graduate student. Funds payable to the scholarship recipients will be sent to the financial aid office of the college or university for equal disbursement for each academic term or semester. Scholarship awardees must maintain satisfactory academic progress, as defined by the institution, in order to continue to receive the scholarship. Multi-year scholarship awards are considered by the Foundation. Scholarship recipients are expected to meet at least once a year with the board of directors of The North Umpqua Foundation.

Nominations complete with the faculty letter of recommendation and the student essay outlining their academic and professional goals should be sent to the address below,
